New York, NY - The Raandesk® Gallery of Art leads off 2008 with an exhibition of new works by New York artist Carla E. Reyes in “Feminine Continuity,” presented in partnership with In Good Company, a work, meeting and learning center for entrepreneurial women. An opening reception will be held on February 8 from 6:00pm-9:00pm and is free and open to the public.
Raandesk® Gallery of Art proprietor Jessica L. Porter has partnered with In Good Company to showcase Reyes’ work, which is greatly influenced by the power of the feminine mystique and nature. On view at the contemporary business workspace in the Flatiron District, Reyes’ works explore the feminine mystique through her distinctive collage paintings that combine highly textural surfaces with earth-toned palettes. With subject matter that is inspired by primitive art forms, the natural world and her own vivid imagination, she has created highly dimensional artworks that are carefully constructed layers of paper and paint, some figurative, some geometric and others imagined.
“This venue will expose Carla’s work to a group of dedicated women entrepreneur’s and at the same time enhance their work environments” explained Porter. “Carla’s work not only explores a range of subject matters related to nature and the importance of the senses – especially sight and touch, but also has an intellectually gratifying effect to the viewer because Carla has been influenced by so many types of art from Latin folk artists to surrealists”.
In Good Company is an entrepreneurial hub for women who seek community, professional settings and productive work environments for conducting business, holding meetings, or gathering with other female entrepreneurs to share ideas. “Feminine Continuity” is on view in the public areas of the workplaces center, Monday-Friday, 9am-8pm, and will remain on exhibition through April 18, 2008. Other times are available by appointment (email Raandesk at info@raandeskgallery.com to request a time).
Painter and mixed media collage artist Carla E. Reyes was born to a Colombian father and an Italian-American mother in New York City, where she currently resides in Kew Gardens, Queens. Very intrigued by the process of making art as a primitive and visceral experience, Reyes creates low relief, sculptural and textural paintings.
Inspired by the colors and textures of nature, early works of art and decoration, and the interaction between natural and man-made surfaces, she uses her process and application of color to create texture and depth. Through texture, abstract form, and image, she explores and alludes to the fundamental elements and mysteries of nature and existence: impermanence, decay, regeneration, birth, growth, history, archeology and spirituality. Collage materials may include branches, leaves, sand, and pebbles to create literal materialism in her work. Reyes enjoys working on the floor; creating a more physical interaction with the work, and building her own handmade shaped canvases. Reyes has been exhibiting her artwork professionally in and around the NYC area since 1999. She graduated from F.I.T., NYC, in 2002 with a BFA in Restoration and an AAS in Fine Arts.
